New York band Anthrax is just as legendary as Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth and is counted with these others among the Big Four. The band was founded in 1981 in New York by guitarists Scott Iam and Danny Lilker. From the very start, they manage to combine fast paced heavy metal and hardcore punk with a large slice of humor. The albums ‘Fistful Of Metal’, ‘Spreading The Disease’ and ‘Among The Living’ are part of the collective metal consciousness. Anthrax was also one of the first bands to mix hiphop with metal in songs like ‘I’m The Man’, culminating in a brilliant cover of Public Enemy’s ‘Bring The Noise’. They were most successful in their late eighties lineup featuring Scott Ian, Frank Bello, Joey Belladonna, Charlie Benante and Danny Spitz. For a second it looked like they were gearing up for a mainstream breakthrough, but things went awry during the nineties, resulting in a revolving door of lineup changes. In 2003 they finally have their due with album ‘We’ve Come For You All’. The Scott Ian fronted band is now reunited with singer Joey Belladonna, which already resulted in a terrific new album called ‘Worship Music’. |
